Size. When it comes to size, the giant panda takes the spotlight. Adult giant pandas can reach a height of about 2-3 feet (60-90 cm) at the shoulder and can weigh around 200-300 pounds (90-135 kg). In contrast, the red panda is much smaller, measuring only about 20-26 inches (50-65 cm) in length and weighing between 8-14 pounds (3.6-6.3 kg).
These studies showed that red pandas are relatively closer to the American raccoon. On the other hand, in deeper studies, researchers found out that red pandas evolved separately from their common ancestors with bears way back 40 million years ago.
