In retrospect, it became clear that the music following punk could be divided, more or less, into two categories -- post-punk and new wave. Where post-punk was arty, difficult, and challenging, new wave was pop music, pure and simple. But if new wave came about the same time as post-punk did, then it predates goth so can't be considered as such.

Prog adds new rooms onto the house, post-punk and post-rock tear the house down and build something else with the pieces. The differences are pretty clear imo. Prog-rock expands on its origins primarily in form, harmony, and meter. Post-rock is more about expanding on texture, space, and timbre.
