The Southeast culture area covered what is now the southeastern United States. It extended from the southern edge of the Northeast culture area to the Gulf of Mexico. From east to west it stretched from the Atlantic Ocean to just west of the Mississippi River valley. The region includes a variety of landscapes and environments.
Overview. The Southeastern region of North America was an agriculturally productive region for many Native American groups living in the area. The Mississippian culture built enormous mounds and organized urban centers. The Five Civilized Tribes of the Southeast created chiefdoms and, later, alliances with European settlers.
