     For writing admin scripts, I would recommend the current Python 3.x variant and http://diveintopython3.org. As you already know how to program, you will pick up the differences between 3.x and 2.x rather easily in case you should need a 2.x-only library.

     For your purposes, the major difference between 2.x and 3.x are likely print being a function (3.x) vs. a special command (2.x) and strings that are always unicode (3.x) vs. special unicode-strings (2.x).

     Python 2.6 (and 2.5, 2.4) are what you will find installed on most machines (Linux) and what you will find most code written in. Therefore I'd start with Python 2.6.

     It's really going to depend on what you want to do. Generally speaking Python 3 "isn't ready yet", in the sense that few libraries support Python 3. This will end up greatly limiting what you can accomplish with the language as a beginner.

     On the other hand, if you think you'll be spending your time on more "pure programming" tasks as you learn your way around, then Python 3 can be a good starting point, since things like strings are wildly different in Python 3.

     So, what do you want out of Python right now? Do you want to make useful things? Python 2.x. Do you want to learn about Python for the sake of learning about Python? Python 3.

     Here in a year or two, Python 3 will likely start being the default choice. Until then, it's really up to you. But you can be certain that whatever skills in Python you pick up are going to be useful in 2.x and 3. Some important things changed in Python 3, but Python 3 is still Python.

     As far as I am aware, python 3.9 is the only version that isn't officially supported because it is still very new. (Although there is a pre-release version of pygame that does work)

     As I said, python 3.9 is the very latest version but it is so new that pygame hasn't had time to be updated to support it.

     I personally use python 3.8 for pygame development since its the newest version of python that works with the public release of pygame but there are probably lots of people who use versions all the way down to 3.5 or maybe even 3.4. Basically just use whatever you are comfortable with/have installed already and you should be fine.

     You could have multiple Python versions on your macOS.

     You may check that by command, type or which command, like:

     which -a python python2 python2.7 python3 python3.6-

     Or type python in Terminal and hit Tab few times for auto completion, which is equivalent to:

     compgen -c python-

     By default python/pip commands points to the first binary found in PATH environment variable depending what's actually installed. So before installing Python packages with Homebrew, the default Python is installed in /usr/bin which is shipped with your macOS (e.g. Python 2.7.10 on High Sierra). Any versions found in /usr/local (such as /usr/local/bin) are provided by external packages.

     It is generally advised, that when working with multiple versions, for Python 2 you may use python2/pip2 command, respectively for Python 3 you can use python3/pip3, but it depends on your configuration which commands are available.

     It is also worth to mention, that since release of Homebrew 1.5.0+ (on 19 January 2018), the python formula has been upgraded to Python 3.x and a python@2 formula will be added for installing Python 2.7. Before, python formula was pointing to Python 2.

     For instance, if you've installed different version via Homebrew, try the following command:

     brew list python python3-

     or:

     brew list | grep ^python-

     it'll show you all Python files installed with the package.

     Alternatively you may use apropos or locate python command to locate more Python related files.

     To check any environment variables related to Python, run:

     env | grep ^PYTHON-

     To address your issues:

     sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.locate.plist-

     • Error: No such keg: /usr/local/Cellar/pythonMeans you don't have Python installed via Homebrew. However double check by specifying only one package at a time (like brew list python python2 python3 ).
     • The locate database ( /var/db/locate.database ) does not exist.Follow the advice and run: sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.locate.plistAfter the database is rebuild, you can use locate command.
