Kingston was founded in August 1882 when miner Jack Sheddon discovered a rich lode of silver ore at what would be one of the Southwes most famous mines: the Solitaire. town was named for another area mine: the Iron King.
When places other than Kingston and Massachusetts are named in the original records, they are given in the printed copy. In all items from town records the original spelling is followed, and no attempt is made to correct errors appearing in the records or to harmonize conflicting names or dates.
By 1872, when Kingston finally became Jamaica’s capital city, many wealthy families were already moving beyond the original town boundaries to the more genteel areas that today comprise uptown Kingston.
