May 2, 2024 · When Marnie Was There is a visually stunning and very moving movie that isn’t talked about enough. It’s a genius piece of work from Studio Ghibli where the audience can never tell whether they’re in the real world or have been sucked in by a magical one.

If you struggle with social anxiety, have family issues, ever hated yourself, or never fit in, this might be for you. Anna is a tremendous and unique protagonist for the studio. At first it seems like a quiet, character-driven novel, but at the conclusion of the novel, we realize it is almost a fantasy. It has been described as a near-fantasy novel.
