Rurik's descendents became known as the Rus. Rurik's successor Oleg using Novgorod as a base, extended his influence south along rivers which were the principal trade routes at the time. Oleg seized control of Kiev, the most important city on the Dineper (882). This provided the beginning of a unified state based on dynastic rule.
The chronicle cites Rurik as the progenitor of a dynasty that ruled in Eastern Europe until 1598. Another Varangian, Oleg, moved south from Novgorod to expel the Khazars from Kiev and founded Kievan Rus' about 880. During the next thirty-five years, Oleg subdued the various East Slavic tribes.

Already in 1239, the Mongols attacked southern Russia. In October, fell Chernigov. The ruin has been Glukhov, Putivl, Rylsk. In 1240 the nomads besieged and took Kiev. Soon the same fate awaited Galich. Sacking a key Russian city, Batu did Rurik its tributaries. Thus began the period of the Golden Horde, which lasted until the XV century.
Whether Rurik took the city by force or was invited to rule, he certainly invested the city. From Novgorod, Rurik’s successor Oleg extended the power of the city southward. In 882 he gained control of Kiev, a Slavic city that had arisen along the Dnep River around the 5th century.

Even before his presence began, there was the Rus’ Khaganate that existed for a while, but only as a collection of settlements used by Varangian traders.
Princess Olga of Kiev was the polar opposite of this saintly image, though she was declared a saint equal to the Apostles by the Russian Orthodox Church. Her exact date of birth is unknown, but we do know that Princess Olga married Prince Igor, of the Rurik dynasty of Russian tsars, before 912 CE.

The Dnieper River, along with Kiev was an important trade route. The importance of this trade route is also one of the reasons that Kiev was chosen as the center for control. Kievan Rus’ continued to grow until, at its peak, it reached from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea and from the Carpathian Mountains to the Oka river.
