I'm also a manga reader and my exposure to non-canon One Piece material has been G8, One Piece Movie 6, Film Red, and Stampede. I definitely think watching G8 and Movie 6 between Skypia and Long Ring Long Land is a good choice. However, I recognize that my knowledge is limited.
Sometimes I find scenes and arcs in One Piece that make me question if they were the right company to pick it up, despite all the good they've done with the series. Argument for Luffy consistently using acoc. I will go directly to the point. In Chapter 1044, when Luffy's awakening occurs, he declares, "This is the pinnacle of what I can do, GEAR 5." This statement indicates that GEAR 5 represents the peak of Luffy's capabilities. So i assume that being in gear 5 automatically mean being at his strongest.
