Fort Baker was an active US military post from 1901 to 1995 when the army turned the lands over to the National Park Service as part of the Golden Gate National Recreaion Area. Even with hundreds of years of stories at this place, here are a few that have been saved.
An Endicott-period Army Post. Fort Baker is a historic army post located in the Marin Headlands. The post, built between 1902 and 1910, is one of the park’s best examples of the army’s “Endicott Period” military construction, named after the late 19 th century Secretary of War, William C. Endicott.
The Baker Beach Coast Trail meanders amongst the bluffs above Baker Beach and has a stunning view of the Golden Gate Bridge, and the Marin Headlands. Start from the Fort Point National Historical Site. The East and West Gun Batteries were built in 1873 and stocked with cannons for coastal defense.
