Terrassa originated as the Roman town of Egara (Municipium Flavium Egara), which was founded during the time of the emperor Vespasian (69–79 CE), alongside the torrent of Vallparadís (nowadays an urban park) close to the Iberian town of Egosa, on the site of which some ceramics and coins have been found.

The medieval town of Terrassa grew up around a castle, el Castell Palau, during the ninth century. Most of the castle was torn down in 1891, leaving only one tower, el Torre del Palau, which is located near the town hall in the centre of Terrassa. The tower is now part of the Museum of Terrassa, a small museum dedicated to the history of the city.
