Yeah I think the fact that he's basically in Aeryn's original position is a big part of it. He can't go back, not only because he's irreversibly contaminated but because he spent a bunch of time in the chair, both informing Scorpius that he put his own vendetta over Peacekeeper orders, and fucking him up/punishing him because the chair itself is obviously torturous.
