Wildfires can burn in forests, grasslands, savannas, and other ecosystems, and have been doing so for hundreds of millions of years. They are not limited to a particular continent or environment.

The past week brought a lot of new fire activity, with 91 new large incidents, of which 63 have been contained. 80 of these incidents were in the Southern Area, including the Smokehouse Creek Fire in the Texas panhandle, which is currently measured at 1,075,000 acres after a period of rapid, wind-driven growth via spotting.
