Dec 3, 2019 · Windsor Castle is located in Berkshire, England, and was built as a motte and bailey castle by William the Conqueror (r. 1066-1087). Converted into stone by Henry II of England (r. 1165-1179), the shell keep tower was rebuilt by Edward III of England (r. 1327-1377). The castle was then added to and modified many times over the centuries.

Cost is around £21-23 per adult. There is a parade from the Guards who garrison the castle. The guards march from Victoria Barracks on Sheet Street, up the High Street and into Windsor Castle. The best places to watch just before 11:00AM is Windsor High Street or on the Corn Exchange under Windsor Guildhall.

Windsor Castle grounds cover 52,609 square metres (13.000 acres) and combines the features of a fortification, a palace, and a small town. The present-day castle was created during a sequence of phased building projects, culminating in the reconstruction work after a fire in 1992.

There was a huge fire at the castle in November 1992 which took 15 hours and 1.5 million gallons of water to extinguish. It began in the Private Chapel and soon spread to affect approximately one fifth of the castle.
