It was named for James B. Wright, one of the members of the committee responsible for selecting the site for the town. The city is the county seat of Johnson County.

Meeks is an unincorporated community in Johnson County, in the U.S. state of Georgia. History. The first permanent settlement at Meeks was made ca. 1888. The Wrightsville and Tennille Railroad (W&T) was chartered in 1883 with the purpose of building a connection with the Central of Georgia Railroad at Tennille, GA to Wrightsville, GA. The line started construction, and by March 1884, 1.5 miles had been completed, however grading work was delayed at that time by heavy rains.
