Seasoned gangster Frank Wilson (Humphrey Bogart) is schooling the naive young Johnny Stone (Billy Halop) in the ways of crime. Initially, their small-time holdups go off without a hitch, but things take a disastrous turn when a con goes awry and Frank ends up gunning down a shop owner. After the murder is pinned on someone dear to Johnny's sister, Madge (Gale Page), Johnny wants to right the wrong, even if it means jail time.
