was recorded and had been completed some time in 2022 while Poppy was briefly with Republic Records and Lava Records. However, the album's release was delayed due to Poppy leaving said labels. Poppy first confirmed the album was in the works in the winter 2022 print of Revolver Magazine. On June 15th, 2023, Poppy confirmed on an Instagram story that the album's masters and artwork were complete. Poppy announced the album alongside the tracklist on July 19th, 2023.
In an interview with Sumerian Records published on July 19th, 2023, it was revealed that the album was heavily inspired by early '90s industrial music. Poppy took direct inspiration from artists such as Blondie, Blawan, Burial, David Bowie, Gary Numan, Talking Heads and Tom Tom Club. Poppy described the recording progress as:
In a September 2023 interview with Kerrang! Poppy revealed that she named the album "Zig" after the angular direction of a zigzag.
In an interview with Atwood Magazine, Poppy ambiguously stated that she considers Zig to be "part 1", however it is currently unclear what this refers to. Later, in an interview with the Zach Sang Show, she would reiterate this claim and implied that Zig could be half of Zag.
On April 5th, 2023, Poppy announced via social media that she would be going on tour in August 2023 alongside American artist Pvris in promotion of Zig. Ticket pre-sales began on April 7th, 2023.
Poppy would announce two additional tours to promote the album on September 20th. She will be the supporting act for 15 dates of Bad Omens' Concrete Forever Tour during the Europe-leg in January 2024. Alongside this, she announced a standalone Zig Tour which will begin in the United Kingdom in February 2024.
"Church Outfit" was released to digital retailers through Sumerian Records on April 4th, 2023, and served as the lead single to the album. Poppy co-wrote the song with Simon Wilcox and Ali Payami, and it was produced by Payami.
"Knockoff" was released to digital retailers through Sumerian Records on July 19th, 2023, and served as the second single to the album. Poppy co-wrote the song with Simon Wilcox, Ian Kirkpatrick, Sean Douglas and Ali Payami. It was produced by Payami with additional production from Kirkpatrick.
"Motorbike" was released to digital retailers through Sumerian Records on September 12th, 2023, and served as the third single to the album. Poppy co-wrote the song with Simon Wilcox and Ali Payami, and it was produced by Payami.
"Hard" was released to digital retailers through Sumerian Records on October 20, 2023, and served as the fourth single to the album. Poppy co-wrote the song with Simon Wilcox and Ali Payami, and it was produced by Payami.
•On May 3rd, 2023, Poppy released a cover of Kittie's "Spit" as a single. On May 10th, 2023, it was confirmed that it would be a non-album single and would not appear on the album.
