The film's ostensible hero, Vic (Alan Bates) is a young man living with his parents and younger brother, working in a local firm, trying to get on in life - yet he's at that age when it's hard to pin down any certain future path, and he's tempted to travel, to see beyond the chimney-framed horizons.
