A Little Night Music (German: Das Lächeln einer Sommernacht) is a 1977 musical romantic comedy film directed by Harold Prince, his second and final directorial role. The screenplay by Hugh Wheeler is adapted from his libretto for Stephen Sondheim's 1973 musical of the same name, itself based on Ingmar Bergman's 1955 film, Smiles of a Summer Night.
Frederick Egerman (Len Cariou) is very happy in his marriage to a seventeen-year-old virgin, Anne (Lesley-Anne Down). Only she's been a virgin for the whole eleven months of the marriage, and being a bit restless, Fredrick goes to see an old flame, the famous actress Desiree Armfeldt (Dame Elizabeth Taylor).
A Little Night Music won the Tony Award for Best Musical of 1973. Inspired by the Ingmar Bergman film, Sommarnattens leende (1955)
