  1. A Pure Formality movie review (1995) | Roger Ebert

    www.rogerebert.com/reviews/a-pure-formality-1995

Having made the splendidly entertaining "Cinema Paradiso" in 1988, Giuseppe Tornatore now exhibits his versatility with "A Pure Formality," which is not entertaining at all. This is a grim, relentless, depressing shaggy dog movie with a surprise ending that explains everything - and, therefore, nothing. The movie opens with a gunshot, and then with a man running desperately through the rain.

Feb 04, 2012 · The ending of "A Pure Formality" actually reverberates backward, trivializing most of what has gone before. You walk out feeling cheated, and it's very easy to forget that the picture is 98 minutes...

  5. It's rather puzzling how A Pure Formality can be so obscure, since it stars two big names of the movie industry (Gérard Depardieu and Roman Polanski) and since it's a quite good movie. A Pure Formality follows a man claiming to be the famous writer Onoff (Gérard Depardieu), who is found one stormy night in the middle of the woods by the police.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best films you'll ever see! Just don't watch it on Amazon Instant Video! Truly one of the best films you will ever see that no one knows about. A precursor to all the Sixth Sense thrillers, but done better then anything M. Night could do.

  8. A Pure Formality is almost entirely Gérard Depardieu and Roman Polanski's show. Depardieu gives one of the best performances of his career, but Polanski, while obviously not known for his work as an actor, manages to match his intensity.
