When she was first lady, Abigail Fillmore helped establish a reference library in the White House, and she frequently invited popular authors and performers to visit with her at the presidential mansion. The gold chain that hangs from her neck in this portrait would have been attached to a watch to be used to keep up with her busy social schedule.
Coming just twenty-four days after she left her role as First Lady, Abigail Fillmore's death was more widely reported in detail, along with praiseful obituaries, than that of any of her predecessors. Both Congress and the President's Cabinet adjourned in mourning. Death: 55 years old, 30 March 1853. Washington, D.C.
