The terms accommodations and modifications are commonly used when children have a 504 plan or an Individualized Education Program (IEP). While the two words might sound similar and often you may see them incorrectly used interchangeably, they have very different meanings.
If your child or student has an IEP, accommodations and modifications must be easily identified in the present level and goal sections. Both areas describe the setups and necessary conditions for a student to perform. They embed those how-tos throughout the IEP, resulting in a sound education plan.
Accommodations and modifications are the tools used by the IEP team to achieve that end. Accommodations allow a student to complete the same tasks as their non-LD peers but with some variation in time, format, setting, and/or presentation.
Modifications are changes to the level of instruction provided or tested. Modifications create a different standard as compared to the grade level standard for the student receiving the modifications. They are practices and procedures that change the nature of the task or target skill.
