Dec 9, 2015 · The 30 caves at Ajanta lie to the north of Aurangabad in the Indhyadri range of Western Ghats. The caves, famous for their temple architecture and many delicately drawn murals, are located in a 76 m high, horseshoe-shaped escarpment overlooking the Waghora (tiger) River.
There are about twenty-five caves from this period of extensive activity at Ajantā. These include two chaityagṛhas (Cave 19 and 26) and a new kind of cave type at Ajanta - a type of vihāra that also includes a Buddha shrine. Caves 1, 2, 16 and 17 have the best preserved paintings from this period.
Ajanta consists of thirty caves, each dedicated to the life of the Buddha. Each cave is filled with sculptures, wall murals, and ceiling paintings. Though much of this site has collapsed, what remains at Ajanta has allowed a glimpse into the artistic traditions of ancient India.

The Ajanta Caves are rock-cut cave monuments that contain Buddhist religious paintings and sculptures. The 30 caves are excavated out of a vertical cliff. They date from two stages: the Satavahana dynasty (2nd – 1st century BCE, with austere caves) and the Vakataka dynasty (5th to 6th century CE, with exquisite mural paintings).
