My parents lived in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, until I was 3 years old, when we moved to Highland Park, NJ, where I lived until I went away to college.

Gaining his PhD in physics in 1971, he began a series of postdoctoral positions at Princeton, Columbia, and Cornell universities, and the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center.
