On October 31, 2003, 13-year-old Bethany Hamilton went to surf along Tunnels Beach, Kauai, with her friend Alana Blanchard, and Alana’s father and brother. A 14-foot-long shark attacked her and Hamilton was rushed to Wilcox Memorial Hospital, where her father was scheduled to have a knee surgery that same morning.
In the year 2003, 13-year-old Bethany Hamilton lives in Kauai, Hawaii with her parents Tom and Cheri, and two older brothers, Noah and Timmy. All are surfers, but she and her best friend, Alana Blanchard, have grown up with a passion for the sport and have competed together most of their childhood.

The exhibit tells the story of Bethany losing her left arm to a Tiger shark while surfing at Tunnels Beach on Kauai, how she survived that attack through the help of Alana Blanchard and her family, and the determination exhibited by Bethany to not only recover from the incident, but return to surfing a mere three weeks after the attack.
