There's no bridge to the island, so visitors going to or from Alcatraz use a ferry operated by Alcatraz Cruises. Ferries leave from San Francisco's Pier 33 about every half hour starting at 8:45 a.m. Parking can be difficult to find near Pier 33, so visitors should use one of the city's many public transportation alternatives instead.

Following the acquisition of California by the United States as a result of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (1848) which ended the Mexican–American War, and the onset of the California Gold Rush the following year, the U.S. Army began studying the suitability of Alcatraz Island for the positioning of coastal batteries to protect the approaches to San Francisco Bay.
