Information. The lake in El Retiro Park is one of the most visited parts of the green space. It’s here where this sculpture-cum-landmark which pays tribute to King Alfonso XII is located. Inaugurated in 1922 by his son Alfonso XIII, the monument is inspired by works designed by Victor Manuel II in Rome and William I in Berlin.
It’s the loveliest part of the park and this is the biggest and most striking monument in a park that is definitely not short of monuments, sculptures and fountains. The bronze and marble structure is over 30 metres high and is topped with a bronze statue of King Alfonso XII, in full military dress on horse-back.
