- SUV. Far and away the most popular body style, SUVs are prized for their versatility. Like other types of cars, sport utility vehicles have a complex history.
- Sedan. Before crossover SUVs took over the road, the four-door sedan was the predominant vehicle type. Traditionally, sedans are three-box designs, with the engine in front, cabin in the center, and trunk in the rear.
- Truck. While SUVs have the largest number of variants on the roads, truck models outsell them in the U.S. Historically pickup trucks were work vehicles that could get a crew to a job site and bring all their gear with them in an open bed behind the cab.
- Coupe. Back when four-door sedans were the practical family option, two-door coupes were the sportier, fashion-forward option. As the market moved toward larger vehicles in the 21st century, the often prettier yet less practical coupes became less popular to the point where the only remaining examples were performance cars.

- Sedan (Saloon) A sedan is a famous example of a four-door passenger car with a traditional trunk. It has a 3-box design consisting of separate compartments for an engine, passengers, and cargo.
- Coupe. A coupe is a car whose body style is defined by simplicity. It has historically been considered a two-door car with a trunk and a solid roof. It is a minimalist car with an impressive compact look.
- Station Wagon. Station wagons, also called estate cars, are similar to sedans but have an extended roofline and a hatch door at the rear instead of a trunk.
- Hatchback. Hatchbacks are passenger cars that are closely related to sedans. The term “hatchback” traditionally means a compact or subcompact sedan with a squared-off roof and steeply raked hatch or rear door that swings upward.
- Sports Car. The sports car segment is in a gray area without a hard-and-fast definition. Once upon a time, you only referred to a two-seat convertible — like the Mazda MX-5 Miata and the BMW Z4 — as a sports car.
- Hatchback. Typically, hatchbacks are smaller (subcompact or compact) with four passenger doors plus a fifth door on the back in place of a trunk lid. We’d lump the Subaru Impreza 5-Door, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and Volkswagen Golf GTI into this group.
- Coupe. Coupes come in every size, from compact to full size. Historically, a coupe is a 2-door car with a hard roof and a backseat. For example, the Chevy Camaro, Dodge Challenger, Infiniti Q60, and Audi A5 fit into this mold.
- Sedan. There isn’t much ambiguity in the definition of a sedan. It has always been a 4-door hardtop with two rows of seats and a trunk. Although there are fewer and fewer sedans on the market, they continue to populate subcompact, compact, midsize, and full-size categories.
