Der Altmarkt ist der älteste Platz Dresdens. Der mit der Stadtgründung planmäßig angelegte Marktplatz wurde 1370 erstmals als circulus erwähnt. [1] In späteren Urkunden wurde er 1400 als margt, 1410 als ring und 1452 als forum bezeichnet. Ihm direkt benachbart ist die Kreuzkirche, das über Jahrhunderte bedeutendste sakrale Bauwerk der Stadt.
