The extensive and diverse collections at the Beneski Museum are the result of the work of faculty, students and alumni over the course of the College’s history, derived from expeditions, donations and exchanges. The physical and biological sciences have been a vital part of the Amherst College curriculum from the time of its founding 1821.
The Octagon at Amherst College was the first natural history museum and observatory on campus. Edward Hitchcock (President of Amherst College in 1845) hired Henry A. Sykes to build it. [1] It was intended to be unusual, with its elegant dome observatory and the collection of materials ranging from meteorites to animals and fossils .

In most cases visitors will be greeted by Student Educators. These are Amherst College undergraduates participating in workstudy or internships. Behind the scenes are Amherst College campus facilities staff, custodians, a cadre of museum security staff members that are shared with the Mead Art Museum, and amazing collections folks.
