May 8, 2019 · Facts about the animal kingdom. Animals in Antarctica List. 3 comments. By Ana Diaz Maqueda, Biologist specialized in ethology. Updated: May 8, 2019. Antarctica is the coldest and most inhospitable continent on planet Earth. In fact, the coldest temperature ever recorded on Earth was -90 ºC at Antarctica's Vostok station.
It is colder and windier than in any other place on Earth. And yet it is home to an abundance of wildlife – from emperor penguins and orcas to leopard seals and albatrosses. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the vast array of animals that call this unique continent home.
The most familiar animal of Antarctica is probably the penguin. They have adapted to the cold, coastal waters. Their wings serve as flippers as they “fly” through the water in search of prey such as squid and fish.
