  3. Aug 11, 2017 · Yes, believe it or not, “Annabelle: Creation” has what the first film was so clearly lacking: a strong visual language. Sandberg and his team do a marvelous job at building tension through old-fashioned horror movie means like forcing our perspective to stay with our terrified young ladies.

Annabelle: Creation screened at the LA Film Festival. This is an advance review ahead of the movie's August release.

Annabelle: Creation is a marked improvement over its 2014 predecessor, Annabelle. Although neither film can top the movie that spawned them, James Wan’s The Conjuring, Annabelle: Creation is the rare horror sequel that improves upon the original, featuring more engaging protagonists and a far less problematic ending.

On paper, Annabelle: Creation shouldn’t work as well as it does given its litany of genre cliches and derivative elements, which include: a remote house where an evil spirit resides; a creepy doll; possession; children in peril; religious figures battling demons; Bible pages posted to walls; a forbidden room, etc. Thanks to the sincerity of its characters and director David F. Sandberg’s execution, though, what could have been emotionally vacant or downright silly is instead genuine and spooky.

Annabelle: Creation doesn’t explore any new ground, either as a horror movie or as an entry in the expanding Conjuring universe, but it does manage to yield enough of the old school spookiness fans of this franchise expect and enjoy, while also providing a more emotionally satisfying tale than its predecessor.
