It runs north–south through the Southern Uplands from Annanhead (north of Moffat) to Annan on the Solway Firth, and in its higher reaches it separates the Moffat hills on the east from the Lowther hills to the west.

This place, which is of remote antiquity. The town is pleasantly situated on the eastern bank of the river Annan, about a couple of miles from its influx into Solway Frith.
Annan is a market town in Dumfries and Galloway, in southwest Scotland, with a population of 8760 in 2020. It grew up at the navigable limit of the River Annan, which flows into Solway Firth, and the poet Robert Burns worked here for a time as an exciseman.
