  2. Jul 11, 2008 · For tidal height it is the "rule of 12" 1-2-3-3-2-1. 1/12 the total change in the first hour, 2/12 the second hour, etc. I know of no similar general rule for currents. Current flows are just too variable. Consider the Cape Cod canal, 3 ft tides on one end, 9 ft tides on the other.

  3. May 26, 2022 · These are for the shipping channel near Poplar Island in the Chesapeake Bay. I think that you can see the lag clearly if we look at the water level and current at 1400 on 5/27. In the tide chart (water level) Dead high tide occurs right at 1400. In the chart below that, you can see that max flood occurs roughly an hour and half after max high tide.

Check NOAA Tides and Currents and look under current predictions under products. The 2011 numbers aren't up yet but should be in the next few weeks. After East River we anchor behind Sandy Hook.
