When Victor Kugler hesitates, the SD men urge him on. Right in front of them, another stairway, barely wide enough for one person, leads to the upper floor of the secret annex. Kugler goes up the left side of this narrow stairway and opens a door. The first person he sees is Anne’s mother,Edith Frank, sitting at her table.

All the occupants and two helpers (Victor Kugler, Johannes Kleiman) were arrested. The dairy was found and kept by Miep Gies and Bep Voskulij. After the war Miep gave the unread diary to Otto Frank who, not without doubts, finally decided to publish the it in 1947.
