It is in the collection of the National Gallery, London. The picture was painted by Antonello during his Venetian sojourn, and was the property of Antonio Pasqualino.
His earliest known works, a Crucifixion ( c. 1455) and St. Jerome in His Study ( c. 1460), already show Antonello’s characteristic combination of Flemish technique and realism with typically Italian modeling of forms and clarity of spatial arrangement. In 1457 Antonello returned to Messina, where he worked until 1474.

Antonello's St Jerome in His Study, c. 1475. Antonello was born at Messina around 1429–1431, to Garita (Margherita) and Giovanni de Antonio Mazonus, a sculptor who trained him early on. He and his family resided in the Sicofanti district of the city.
