    Meucci, Antonio
    /meɪˈuːtʃi/
    • 1. (1808–96), Italian engineer, now widely regarded as the inventor of the telephone. He demonstrated his device in 1860 and took out a patent caveat in 1871; however, the combined effects of poverty and mismanagement allowed credit for the invention to rest for many years with Alexander Graham Bell, who patented his own device in 1876.
