Overview. Vital Records has death records (since 1881) for all of New York State except New York City. It does not have these records for New York City (the boroughs of Manhattan, Kings (Brooklyn), Queens, Bronx, and Richmond (Staten Island)). Death records are also available from the local Registrar of Vital Statistics where the event occurred.
The below application is required for all orders by mail or in person. Only death certificates for death that occurred after 1949 are available through the NYC Health Department. Death Certificate Application (PDF)

The State Department of Health and local registrars of vital statistics are authorized to furnish uncertified copies of vital records for genealogical purposes.

Oct 17, 2023 · New York State briefly kept death records from 1847 to about 1850 and started recording deaths again in June 1880. Copies of all records can obtained from either the village, town, or city of death or by contacting the state archives. New York City keeps death records separately from New York State.
