He was bleeding profusely from a single bullet wound to the abdomen and could barely stand, according to The New York Times.
Arnold Rothstein was an American businessman, racketeer, and gambler, who became the kingpin of American organized crime scene in the 20s. He is credited with turning the hooliganism of the organized crime syndicates into business enterprises. He was also known to have interests in professional sports, gambling, and fixing sports.
In 1928, a fellow gambler shot Rothstein. True to the underworld code, he died several days later without revealing his assailant’s name. Historian Rockaway reports, "Out of respect for the older Rothstein, Arnold received an Orthodox Jewish funeral with the renowned Orthodox rabbi, Leo Jung, delivering the eulogy."
