August Sicard von Sicardsburg (6 December 1813 – 11 June 1868) [1] was an Austrian architect. He is best remembered as the co-architect of the Vienna State Opera, together with Eduard van der Nüll . Sicardsburg was born in Buda.
After numerous plans had been submitted in a public competition held in 1861, the choice fell on the architects August Sicard von Sicardsburg and Eduard van der Nüll. Even before it was completed, the new opera house was the object of scathing criticism.

Neither of the architects survived to see the opening of ‘their’ opera house: the sensitive van der Nüll committed suicide, and his friend Sicardsburg died of a stroke soon afterwards. On May 25, 1869, the opera house solemnly opened with Mozart's »Don Giovanni« in the presence of Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth.
In terms of the opera itself, the season currently runs for 300 days of the year and puts on over 60 operas and ballets––the largest repertoire of any Opera House. In fact, the set is changed multiple times a day to accommodate rehearsals and performances.
