August Sicard von Sicardsburg (6 December 1813 – 11 June 1868) was an Austrian architect. He is best remembered as the co-architect of the Vienna State Opera , together with Eduard van der Nüll .
After numerous plans had been submitted in a public competition held in 1861, the choice fell on the architects August Sicard von Sicardsburg and Eduard van der Nüll. Even before it was completed, the new opera house was the object of scathing criticism.
The building was the first major building on the Wiener Ringstraße commissioned by the controversial Viennese "city expansion fund". Work on the building commenced in 1861 and was completed in 1869, following plans drawn up by architects August Sicard von Sicardsburg and Eduard van der Nüll.
Constructed in the neo-Renaissance style by August Sicard von Sicardsburg and Eduard van der Nüll between 1861 and 1869, the Vienna State Opera opened on 25 May 1869 with Mozart’s "Don Giovanni". After the destruction of the Second World War, the house reopened in 1955 with Beethoven’s "Fidelio".
