Margraviate of Baden. Today part of. Germany. The Margraviate of Baden-Durlach was an early modern territory of the Holy Roman Empire, in the upper Rhine valley, which existed from 1535 to 1771. It was formed when the Margraviate of Baden was split between the sons of Margrave Christopher I and was named for its capital, Durlach.

Charles William was born in Durlach as the son of Margrave Frederick Magnus of Baden-Durlach and Augusta Maria of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp. [ citation needed ] His older brother had died in 1672 at the age of about one month, so Charles William was born as the hereditary prince.

Karl Ludwig (Charles Louis) was the eldest surviving son of Karl Friedrich, Markgraf von Baden-Durlach, and his first wife, Karoline, Landgräfin von Hessen-Darmstadt, and was born at Karlsruhe, 14 February 1755. He was Hereditary Prince of Baden-Durlach from birth, and Hereditary Prince of Baden, once his father united Baden in 1771.

Georg Friedrich von Baden-Durlach was born on 30 January 1573 in Baden, the son of Charles II, Margrave of Baden-Durlach and Anna of Veldenz. He became ruler of Baden-Hachburg in 1604 upon the death of his father, whose lands were divided between his three sons.
