B&O route map of 1891. In 1866 the B&O began constructing the Metropolitan Branch west out of Washington, which was completed in 1873 after years of erratic effort. Before this line was laid, rail traffic west of Washington had to travel first to Relay or Baltimore before joining the main line.

Mar 11, 2024 · The B&O gained control of the M&C in 1882 and renamed it has the Baltimore & Ohio Southwestern in 1889. Baltimore & Ohio F7A #4499 and GP9 #6496 swing off the Chicago main line and onto the Somerset & Cambria Branch at Rockwood, Pennsylvania in June, 1967. The Western Maryland connection can be seen overhead.
