Its definetly about the methods and experience rather than a general rule of every parent coaching their kids is bad. Masakazu Kagiyama is experienced skater which no doubt helps him when coaching Yuma towards these big competition ( I dont mean every good skater can be a good coach) also looking at Yuma skating you can tell he also is a good coach.
Figure skating is a sport that is overwhelmingly participated by kids, so being the "odd duck" is just to be expected as an older or adult skater. Same is true for martial arts, dance, etc. I don't know if being discouraged is as big a factor in dropping out as the additional responsibilities that come with being older.
