The grounds around the Ballard Locks and the visitor center are home to the Carl S. English, Jr. Botanical Garden, which provides visitors with a lovely place to stroll and picnic. Special events, including live music and garden shows, take place on the grounds throughout the summer.

Officially known as the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, the Ballard Locks is one of Seattle’s most popular tourist attractions, especially during the sunny months. The grounds also feature a fish ladder and the Carl S. English Jr. Botanical Garden — one of the most beautiful park settings in Seattle.
Free guided public tours are available from May 1 through Sept 30 during visitor center hours. Free tours start at 2:00 pm in the visitor center theater and last about an hour. You can join a tour anytime, no registrations are required.
The Ballard Locks carry more boat traffic than any other lock in the U.S., and the locks, along with the fish ladder and the surrounding Carl S. English Jr. Botanical Gardens, attract more than one million visitors annually, making it one of Seattle's top tourist attractions.
