On 8 August 1918, British and Imperial forces in co-operation with the French, launched a major attack against the Germans astride the River Somme, east of the city of Amiens.
The Battle of Amiens began on 8th August 1918 and proved to be the most decisive battle against the Germans to take place on the Western Front during World War One. It was also the first battle of the war to incorporate a completely co-ordinated attack involving all arms, including artillery, tanks, infantry and aircraft.
The objective of the attack at Amiens as outlined in the Foch’s orders was to “free Amiens and the Paris-Amiens railway, and to attack and push back the enemy stationed between the Somme and Avre.”
