The Battle of Stalingrad (17 July 1942 – 2 February 1943) occurred on the Eastern Front of World War II, beginning when Nazi Germany and its Axis allies attacked and became locked in a protracted struggle with the Soviet Union for control over the Soviet city of Stalingrad in what is now southern Russia.

By November 1942 the German 6th Army had captured 90% of the city. The remaining Soviet forces were left into two narrow pockets. The German northern flank was defended by Hungarian, and Romanian units. The southern flank was held by the Romanians.
