Munich (München) is the capital. Area 27,240 square miles (70,550 square km). Pop. (2011) 12,397,614; (2015 est.) 12,843,514.
Bavaria has long had one of the largest economies of any region in Germany, and in Europe. Its GDP in 2007 exceeded €434 billion (about U.S. $600 billion). This makes Bavaria itself one of the largest economies in Europe, and only 20 countries in the world have a higher GDP.
