For the instrumentation of Black Sails, I focused primarily on historically accurate sounds: a string quartet, rhythm guitar trio, percussion duo and various historical solo instruments. Most of this merry band have worked with me for the better part of a decade, and they too had to unlearn our old habits.
Curtis did not actually build my instrument (it was made by a builder named Leif Eriksson), but Curtis has helped maintain it over the years, showing me vital techniques for keeping it in shape before the rigorous Black Sails sessions. As misfortune would have it, however, Curtis was in Paris all month!

When composing Black Sails, Bear really wanted to tap into the vibe and brain of a pirate and create something that was both eerie, and commanding. While guitars, drums, bass, violins, and others were used in the composition of the song, the main instrument of focus in this track is the hurdy-gurdy.
