A Year of Film History Challenge 2019 (watching a little bit of film history month by month, decade by decade)--Director Tod Browning and horror icon Bela Lugosi made a stone cold classic with their 1931 adaptation of the stage play Dracula, and I was hoping maybe that their other based-on-a-play adaptation might be something of an overlooked gem.

Directed by Tod Browning, The Thirteenth Chair is a well-written and acted murder mystery from a time (1929) when, due to primitive sound recording techniques, the camera had to remain in one place during a scene. The result is that the movie, while well-designed, is rather static visually.
