Benedictine College Preparatory was founded in 1911 with 29 students, under the name of Benedictine College, by a group of Benedictine monks from Belmont Abbey in North Carolina. [3] Seeking to continue the work of their founder by establishing learning and culture, they came to Richmond to establish a Catholic high school for boys.

The Benedictine Schools of Richmond are Catholic college preparatory high schools, Saint Gertrude High School and Benedictine College Preparatory, co-located on the Benedictine Abbey campus in Richmond, Virginia, which offer single-sex educational environments for young men and women.
Benedictine has served as the “brother school” to Saint Gertrude High School, intertwining many ceremonies, traditions, and programs between the two single-gender Catholic high schools. For 90 years, the two schools operated just 400 feet apart in the Museum District of Richmond.
